Alameda Council picks SunCal over two other companies to redevelop old naval base after proposed joint pact fell apart

ALAMEDA - Irvine-based SunCal Cos. came out of nowhere Tuesday night to win development rights to the former naval air station, a challenging property that is nonetheless considered one of the best development opportunities in the Bay Area.

The City Council's 3-2 vote to give SunCal a crack at building on the former base, now called Alameda Point, came a month after the same council asked two other companies - Catellus Development Group and Lennar Urban - to forge a partnership for the 700-acre site.

Council members - acting as the Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority - abandoned those plans Tuesday after a city staff report said the partnership the two companies proposed lacked the structure needed to ensure timely development of the base.
