Wording may save airstrip at station

Just 73 words tacked onto a defense spending bill could mean salvation 
for the airstrip at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station.

That is if it clears the Senate and is signed into law by the president.
Introduced to the House of Representatives May 8 and passed late May 10, 
H.R. 2206, the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Care, Katrina Recovered 
and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act of 2007 includes a paragraph 
that would breathe new life into Gov. Ed Rendell's presumed-dead plan 
for Willow Grove.

Section 1323 of the bill makes provision for the secretary of the Navy 
to transfer all lands, easements, facilities and other air operations 
property at Willow Grove to the Air Force, at no cost, for the operation 
of a Joint Interagency Installation.

The base would be used by the Pennsylvania National Guard, Department of 
Defense and other government agencies to carry out Homeland Security, 
national defense and emergency preparedness missions.
