Willow Grove base to become a security hubThe air station will be leased to the state. It will house military units as well as civilian agencies. The job outlook is unclear. By Amy Worden Philadelphia Inquirer (PA) June 1, 2007HARRISBURG - The battle over Willow Grove Naval Air Station has taken more twists and turns than a Blue Angels Hornet - from federal court to Congress and from the state House to the White House. But with a stroke of his pen, President Bush last week all but ended the two-year struggle to save the 1,100-acre base, 15 miles north of Philadelphia, and cleared the way for a new chapter to begin for an installation with a rich aviation history. Gov. Rendell said he envisions the base - with its 8,000-foot runway, large storage and training facilities, and independent power-generating station - as a model homeland security center for the mid-Atlantic region. Under the plan, military units would be based there, along with civilian emergency response and preparedness operations. ...
