Base development may be step closer
City Council will meet Wednesday to consider whether city should begin negotiations with developer SunCal

Irvine-based SunCal Companies indicated Wednesday it is confident a deal can be reached on the development of the former Naval Air Station in Alameda, as the company prepares for a key City Council meeting next week.

Members of the City Council, acting as the Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority at a May 8 meeting, selected SunCal, a privately held company that currently is developing the former Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, to develop the former base.

A number of questions remain about how the former base will be developed, including how many housing units will be built; what historical resources will be protected; and how the city, SunCal and the Navy will work together to clean up the 700-acre site.
