Army: No review of complex needed Toxic groundwater remains concern for Moffett Field By Jason Green Palo Alto Daily News (CA) July 16, 2007These days, rusting swing sets and a palpable sense of emptiness define Moffett Field's Orion Park, where the only sign of life is the occasional jackrabbit. But if the Army gets its way, the site that housed military families for nearly four decades will soon be reborn as a massive Armed Forces Reserve Center complex. Plans for the 270,000-square-foot installation are sketched out in an environmental assessment quietly released by the Army late last week. The Army's 200-plus page report, which will be open to public review until Aug. 12, concludes that the project does not require an additional environmental impact statement because its environmental and socioeconomic effects are negligible, despite the presence of a well-documented plume of toxic groundwater percolating beneath the 30-acre site located east of the NASA Ames Research Center. ...
