Funding is key to River Ridge's north end By LARRY THOMAS New Albany Tribune (IN) August 7, 2007Charlestown Mayor Mike Hall wants to expedite the development of his city's end of the River Ridge Commerce Center, but it could cost the U.S. Army as much as $55 million to decontaminate the area and raze 350 deteriorating buildings there. "I keep asking, 'What's the long-range plan? What's on paper? When are we going to start developing this end,'" said Hall, who personally represents Charlestown on the River Ridge Development Authority, the board that governs the nearly 6,000-acre industrial park. Marc Elliott, River Ridge's executive director, recently returned from the Association of Defense Communities' annual conference in Miami. Elliott said the cleanup of abandoned military bases such as the former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant is an ongoing topic with association members, but that funding is tight because of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. ...
