McPherson plan benefits science, the homeless By KEVIN DUFFY The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (GA) September 12, 2007A sweeping redevelopment proposal for Fort McPherson is now in the hands of the federal government and the U.S. Army. A board created nearly two years ago to come up with a vision for the 488-acre site on Tuesday approved a land use plan broad enough to serve cutting-edge science as well as the homeless. Construction probably won't begin before September 2011, when the Army vacates the property, and could take 20 years. The linchpin of the redevelopment scheme is a proposed 115-acre scientific research park with 1.47 million square feet of office space. The University System of Georgia and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention both have endorsed the idea. Other parts of the plan include 4,600 housing units — 7 percent of which would be for the formerly homeless — 400,000 square feet of retail space, and another 2.18 million square feet of office space. ...
