Jefferson Daily Report (Atlanta, GA) September 18, 2007WHEN STATE AND local officials looked for ideas on an economically viable plan for the soon-to-be closed Fort McPherson Army Base in southwest Atlanta, they found inspiration in the suburbs of Denver. Two Colorado military facilities - Lowry Air Force Base and Fitzsimons Army Medical Center - were closed as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process of 1991 and 1995, respectively. Fitzsimons’ former 578-acre site has been developed into a $4.3 billion medical campus that includes a 160-acre science and technology research park. The 1,886-acre old Lowry Air Force base is being developed into a massive, $2 billion mixed-use community. ...
