Subject: | [CPEO-IRF] Moffett Field's (CA) Hangar One and the State Historic Preservation office |
Another possible savior for Hangar One by Daniel Debolt Mountain View Voice (CA) September 28, 2007The effort to save Hangar One may get a hand from a state office that so far has been relatively invisible on the local level. Representatives from the Office of Historic Preservation recently visited Moffett Field's Hangar One, and director Wayne Donaldson said the visit made him more determined than ever to save the "spectacular piece of engineering." The Navy must consult with Donaldson's office when it announces whether it will demolish the hangar this November. If Donaldson and his staff believe their consultation is "not treated in a serious manner," the matter will then be picked up by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation [ACHP], a federal body that could have the final word on the hangar. ... For the entire article, see http://www.mv-voice.com/news/story.php?story_id=184 *****The article may overstate the authority of the ACHP. The Navy wrote, in its May 2006 Draft Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis for Hangar One: "If the Navy is unable to resolve adverse effects to the satisfaction of the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and Advisory Council Historic Preservation (ACHP), it will take their comments into account and address them in Responsiveness Summaries in a manner consistent with the substantive requirements of [the National Historic Preservation Act]."
