Selfridge gets new unit

100 border agents, 11 new aircraft make up DHS Northern Border Air Wing

Selfridge Air National Guard Base will soon play a major role in 
patrolling the U.S.-Canadian border, serving as home for federal agents 
deploying air and water craft to nab drug smugglers, gun runners and 
illegal aliens.

The Department of Homeland Security has chosen Selfridge as one of its 
Northern Border Air Wing installations, with plans to bring 100 border 
agents and 11 new aircraft to the Harrison Township base.

According to the DHS, the new contingent will beef up the Customs and 
Border Protection crew that scours 863 miles of land and water along the 
border in the "Detroit sector." The Selfridge-based agents will work 
with state and local law enforcement on border security.

With the 520-acre Army garrison shutting down under the Pentagon's 
base-closure process, a developer has been chosen to revamp more than 
600 acres at Selfridge. Communities by Betzak of Farmington Hills will 
develop housing for military retirees, privatize the base's 18-hole golf 
course, and construct office, research and development, and 
light-industrial facilities. The project, which will go forward next 
year, will entail demolition of the aging officers' quarters on the 
base's lakefront.
