Privatized base cleanup eyed

BRUNSWICK - With federal funding for environmental work slow in 
arriving, local base reuse planners are hoping to find ways to ensure 
that cleanups are done in time to redevelop Brunswick Naval Air Station.

One of those ways could be to privatize the environmental restoration of 
the base property, a decision that ultimately must be made by the 
Defense Department.

The Navy is scheduled to leave Brunswick in 2011, but parcels at the 
3,200-acre base can only be turned over to civilian developers after 
they're deemed to be environmentally safe and clean enough for public use.
