Fort authority buys some time Editorial Asbury Park Press (NJ) December 1, 2007 The Army has granted the Fort Monmouth redevelopment authority a nine-month deadline extension for filing its plan for reuse of the fort. We hope it ends up being a moot point. It will be if Congress fully digests its investigative arm's reports and moves to reverse the Defense Department's decision to close the fort as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process. The Government Accountability Office has issued five reports on portions of the 2005 BRAC process, which was designed to make the military more efficient and save money. All concluded that the Pentagon underestimated costs and overestimated savings. A sixth GAO report, focusing on Fort Monmouth, is expected to be released Dec. 12. ...
