Chaffee fire destroys 60-plus buildings

FORT SMITH - In the end, falling temperatures, calming winds and 
carefully deployed bulldozers helped firefighters contain a 
conflagration that whipped across Chaffee Crossing Tuesday.

At least 60 unoccupied buildings - with some estimates at perhaps more 
than three times that number - and at least one business were destroyed 
as fire swept over Chaffee Crossing fanned by high winds Tuesday, 
officials said.

The Chaffee Crossing area, once part of the former Fort Chaffee military 
base, is now managed by the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority. It is 
a 7,000-acre parcel of land decommissioned by the Department of Defense 
as part of the Base Closure and Realignment Commission in 1995.
