Presidio Trust to work with Fisher on museum

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Presidio Trust's announcement Wednesday that it 
will work with Gap founder Don Fisher on a new museum to display his 
vast modern art collection is being billed as a major cultural 
development for the military base turned national park and one that more 
firmly establishes San Francisco as a destination for art aficionados.

"This is really good news for the Presidio and really good for San 
Francisco," said Craig Middleton, executive director of the Presidio 
Trust, a federal agency that has managed the 1,491-acre park since 1997. 
"San Francisco is a beacon to the world, and this adds to that, creating 
a place of innovative beauty, art and history."

In choosing the Fisher plan on Thursday, the seven Presidio Trust 
directors rejected a competing proposal for a history museum at the 
south end of the former Army base's Main Parade Ground that would have 
covered the Spanish exploration to the United States' evolving ties to 
the Pacific Rim.
