Alameda Point would be best zoned commercial Opinion by Richard Bangert San Jose Mercury News (CA) February 1, 2008 Alameda Point holds opportunities for Alameda's future, but not as a new residential suburb. Lower acquisition costs, fewer traffic impacts, more options for tax revenue, job creation, options for power generation sites and lowered hazardous waste cleanup requirements are among the benefits if we decide to redesignate the Point as a commercial zone. In 2008, economic development makes more economic sense than housing development at Alameda Point. Why not look at what the economic marketplace is telling us? Well-funded Alameda Point Community Partners walked away from building residential development at the Point after five years of planning. Oakland and several other cities recently announced an initiative to attract green tech industries to the East Bay; Alameda Point is ideally suited to cash in on this trend, as well as capture other commercial enterprises looking for a new home. Businesses like Clif Bar and Peet's Coffee have recently decided to move here, finding Alameda attractive. We've got green electrical power to sell, and we could have even more if it becomes viable to build a hydrogen fuel cell substation at the Point. These trends should lead us to a new vision. ...
