Tour talks of island cleanup efforts Flyway Festival event explains M.I. projects By ANDREA WOLF Vallejo Times-Herald (CA) February 3, 2008 Flyway Festival tour passengers wipe away condensation on rain-spotted windows at the municipal landfill parcel on Mare Island as Weston Solutions project manager Dwight Gemar, left, describes his company's Mare Island remediation efforts. The tour visited 5 different areas of the island, showcasing cleanup efforts by the various agencies involved in redevelopment. (Mike Jory/Times-Herald) Thousands of pounds of soil are being removed because of harmful toxins, wetlands are being restored and munitions are being cleared in a massive environmental cleanup project on Mare Island. After decades of naval activity, Mare Island was left riddled with petroleum, oil, lead, metals, asbestos and other toxic substances. Despite wet and windy weather Saturday, people from around the Bay Area came out to tour several cleanup sites and learn how the island is being repaired. ...
