JACKSONVILLE ORGANIZES AGAINST CLOSURE The full Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission has not yet even been appointed, but the Navy town of Jacksonville, Florida is already organizing to oppose additional base closures there as part of the 1995 BRAC round. Florida Governor Lawton Chiles recently presented the city of Jacksonville with a $100,000 grant after touring the Naval Aviation Depot there with Senate Armed Services Committee chair Sam Nunn (D- Georgia). The city has already budgeted $500,000 for what it calls, "base defense." (Florida Times Union, October 13, 1994) | |
