The DOE cleanup budget is rumored to be undergoing the knife as well--perhaps by as much as $4.4 billion over the next 5 years. Additionally, the Defense Programs part of DOE (the part that causes the mess) will slough off $1.9 billion of its responsibilities for the "transition" of Savannah River. These monies will show up in the clean up budget. Thus the cuts will be evn deeper than the raw numbers will indicate. GROUPS ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY MUST WORK TOGETHER TO COUNTER THESE CUTS FOR CLEANUP AND, IN THE CASE OF DOE DEFENSE PROGRAMS, RAISES FOR POLLUTING PROJECTS. While I downloaded the DOD sign on letter too late to be a signatory--I think more of these efforts are needed. Peace, Marylia | |
