JOB ANNOUNCEMENT NATIONAL ORGANIZER The Military Toxics Project, is a non-profit national organization that unites activists, peace and environmental organizations, communities, and veterans to: 1) protect public health and the environment from pollution generated by the U.S. military and 2) advance a transition to a sustainable peacetime economy. MTP's mission is based on mutual respect and justice for all people, free from any form of discrimination or bias. MTP works to meet this goal by providing organizing and technical assistance to local organizations; facilitating issue networks and meetings to link groups to affect national policy and support each other; researching the military's impact on the environment; and conducting activities to build a multi-racial movement. These endeavors will result in more effective local leaders and groups and coordinated campaigns which lead to national policy actions that hold the military accountable, promote safe disposal methods, increase public knowledge and participation, and prevent pollution from military sources. OVERVIEW The national organizer will provide community education, technical and organizing assistance, outreach, and training to grassroots community groups, veteran groups, labor groups, and other grassroots groups actively involved in MTP's issue networks. The organizer will facilitate networking and unified strategizing around the issues that impact local communities, workers, tribes, and military (retired and active) personnel. QUALIFICATIONS * experience in comparable organizing position * commitment to democratic process * experience with group process including consensus-based decision-making * good verbal and written communication skills * commitment to building a multi-racial organization that actively works to address and eliminate gender, race and class biases within the organization and the environmental movement as a whole * prior experience with membership-based and grassroots community organizations * ability to work with diverse groups and diverse interests * initiative, time management skills, and ability to work with little supervision * computer skills * ability to facilitate small and large group teleconferences and in-person meetings STARTING SALARY: $25,000 with health and dental benefits STARTING DATE: November 27, 1995 JOB LOCATION: San Francisco, CA Please address application (including cover letter, resume, writing sample, and four references) to: Nikki F.
