"NATIONAL DEFENSE" ON ENVIRONMENTAL SECURITY The military-industrial complex is now taking environmental security seriously. Perhaps to promote its upcoming environmental symposium in Florida, the American Defense Preparedness Association (ADPA) devoted a large part of of its March, 1996 edition of NATIONAL DEFENSE to military base cleanup, pollution prevention, and other environmental issues. While some members of Congress still don't see how environmental work relates to the principal missions of the U.S. military, weapons contractors apparently do. ADPA President Lawrence Skibbie praised Deputy Undersecretary of Defense (Environmental Security) Sherri Wasserman Goodman in the issue's editorial: "Goodman's work in behalf of remediation and restoration, and more recently in pollution prevention, has been outstanding. This innovative and caring environmental leader has repeatedly stressed the importance [of] government working with industry to ensure the U.S. military's access to the most advanced technologies.... Despite budget cutbacks and pressure from Congress to phase out environmental spending from Pentagon accounts, Goodman, Defense Secretary William J. Perry, and other leaders have expressed a strong commitment to cleaning up hazardous waste at their facilities and of initiating programs that will prevent pollution in the future." Lenny Siegel | |
