DOD TRANSFER DROPPED: "Responding to strong objections from 
environmentalists and the Clinton administration," a Defense bill 
conference committee turned down a proposal to transfer 45,000 acres of 
the Kisatchie NF to Ft. Polk, "Greenwire" reports from a New Orleans 
Times-Picayune article. Louisiana's Senators had attached the transfer 
to the DOD bill. The Forest Service and the Army are talking about an 
agreement to keep the land in Forest Service ownership but allow its 
use for Army training.
