Subject: | FY98 DOD CLEANUP BUDGET |
FISCAL YEAR 1998 DEFENSE DEPARTMENT CLEANUP BUDGET DEFENSE CLEANUP (February 7, 1997) has published summary figures for the Defense Department cleanup budget request for fiscal year 1998, submitted by the President to Congress last week. According to DEFENSE CLEANUP, the proposed budget for environmental restoration at Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) facilities has jumped to $1.4 billion, about $630 million above last years' appropriation. For the first time, the proposed BRAC cleanup budget exceeds the environmental restoration proposal for active and former bases. The proposal for the five accounts that formerly made up the Defense Environmental Restoration Account is $1.2 billion, about $100 million less than last year. Of those accounts, the Army proposal has risen but the Air Force, Navy, Office of Secretary of Defense, and Formerly Used Defense Sites funds are to decline. I'll be posting more details on the FY98 budget as a receive them. Lenny Siegel | |
