Subject: | CLARK AFB INVESTORS BACKING OUT? |
Today Newspaper October 25, 1997 CLARK INVESTORS TO PULL OUT DUE TO TOXIC WASTE ISSUE? Clark Field, Pampanga -- A top official of the Clark Development Corp. (CDC) disclosed yesterday that investors in the Clark Special Economic Zone are planning to pull out their businesses here owing to "exaggerated" reports about the toxic-waste problem. Romeo David, CDC president, told TODAY that "negative reports" released by environmental groups have been alarming the investors. "With all the negative issues about the toxic-waste problem here, some of the 206 investors have expressed a desire to pull their projects out of the ecozone," David said. At least one investor, Pacific Dairy, pulled out last week. "We have appealed to the People's Task Force for Bases Cleanup to work with us in finding a solution to the toxic-waste problem,"David said. "We all know that toxic waste is everywhere; we just need to sit down and resolve this matter without scaring off investors." He said CDC has sent vice president Tony Arinieta to the US Embassy to seek the US government's assistance in finding ways to solve the toxic-waste problem. David said CDC is also coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Health and University of the Philippines scientists to work out the problem. The water system inside Clark is being monitored every month to ensure a safe drinking source. David said the toxic-waste problem here is "only minimal," but "blown out of proportion" by environmental groups. "I am appealing to these environmentalists..to please work with us." | |
