Subject: | Range Inventory Cost Estimates |
RANGE RULE INVENTORY COST PROJECTION In response to a written question from Sen. Appropriations Committee member Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Assistant Army Secretary Robert M. ("Mike") Walker reported that a detailed inventory of closed range on active and base closure bases, as called for in the proposed Range Rule, could be as much as $3 million. A similar inventory for formerly used defense sites could cost $5 million. Walker responded: "In order to get an early start on the inventory, funding would need to be in place by the summer of 1998." >From the numbers, I assume that the cost estimates cover the compilation of existing information from sites, not new surveys or site inspections.
