Nuclear Navy Update
An Issue Update from Environmental Health Coalition
April, 1999

Help Stop the Nuclear Megaport --Next Steps

The Navy is pursuing its plans to locate two more nuclear aircraft
carriers in San Diego Bay. While the comment period on the Draft
Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) is closed, we are still demanding
that the Navy issue a new DEIS and hold a new public process. EHC and the
City of Coronado found the first DEIS fatally flawed and have requested a
new Draft be circulated.

As the City stated in its comment letter, "...the City of Coronado has
determined that the Navy's DEIS is so inadequate as to preclude meaningful
analysis, and therefore demands that a revised DEIS be prepared...". The
DEIS contains no worst case accident scenario analysis as required by law
and it fails to include necessary information to determine impacts.
Coronado's radiation consultant stated, "...the draft EIS does not
adequately present the expected radiological impacts to Coronado residents.
The risk values cannot be independently certified..."

The Navy received 1500 comments on DEIS and 1,000 people submitted their
name into the record opposing the DEIS. Navy personnel have stated that
they will make their decision soon regarding a new Draft.

So far, Navy officials, including the San Diego's Navy Mayor, Admiral
Veronica Froman, have refused to meet with EHC and residents to discuss
these concerns.

What you can do:

1. Contact Admiral Veronica Froman and Secretary of the Navy Richard
Danzig (infor below) and tell them you oppose any more nuclear carriers in
San Diego Bay. Ask them to require the Navy to conduct a full and fair
accounting of the environmental and human health impacts on San Diego for
the nuclear Home porting in San Diego Bay. Ask them why they continue to
refuse to meet with community groups and residents on this issue.

2. Contact your Congressional representatives and request that they:
*	Support a new DEIS for the project.
* Ask the Admiral and the Secretary of the Navy why they won't meet with
community groups and residents that are concerned about this issue.
* Tell them you oppose more nuclear carriers in San Diego Bay.
