The Future of Corrective Action: Technical Challenges and Opportunities The Future of Corrective Action is upon us. National leaders in monitoring, assessing and performing cost-effective corrective action will present and work with participants in delineating the challenges and opportunities in eliminating some of the toughest compounds found in the environment. Co-sponsored by the Pittsburgh Technology Council, the Carnegie Mellon Brownfields Center, and Microseeps, Inc., this conference will offer many opportunities. Featured speakers include: Dr. Frank Chapelle, leading researcher for the United States Geological Survey; Donn Marrin, vadose zone monitoring expert at San Diego State University; James Rocco, leading author of ASTM RBCA standards; as well as speakers from the USEPA, Regenesis, Microseeps, and more. The workshop will explore the coming paradigm shift toward cost-effective technologies designed to eliminate risk to human health and the environment based upon a better understanding of the fate and transport of recalcitrant compounds in the subsurface. The workshop will explore promising trends in the corrective action and management of chlorinated solvents, MTBE, metals, pesticides, and heavy organics. The workshop will connect these promising trends to the possibility for more cost-effective remediation and therefore, increased redevelopment potential of highly environmentally-impacted properties. Workshop Agenda 8:00 a.m. Registration - $45 per person/$35 for Pittsburgh Tech. Council members & college students 8:30 a.m. Welcome and Introduction - Michael Taylor, Vita Nouva/Sustainable Brownfields Partnership 8:45 a.m. The Challenges and opportunities for Cost-effective Management of Recalcitrant Compounds Robert Pirkle, Ph.D., Microseeps, Introduction "Indicators of Natural and Enhanced Attenuation in the Vadose Zone", Donn Marrin, Dan Diego State; "Quantifying the Natural Attenuation Capacity of Ground-Water Systems", Frank Chapelle, USGS 10;00 a.m. Promising Technologies for Reducing the Cost of Corrective Action - "Substrate Addition: Enhancing Natural Processes to Remediate Reclacitrant Compounds", William Cox, Regenesis Bioremediation Products; "Phytoremediation: A practical way to contain and/or treat contaminated ground water", James Landmeyer, USGS; "Practical Tools for Sampling and Analysis of Biodegradation Indicators", Pat McLoughlin, Ph.D., Microseeps, Inc. 11:30 a.m. Challenges and Opportunities - Workshops - Participants present data from their latest challenge or opportunity. Led by the national experts, workshop leaders will critique the results and offer solutions in this interactive forum. Workshop 1. Saturated Zone: Challenges and Opportunities, led by Frank Chapelle, USGS Workshop 2. Vadose Zone: Challenges and Opportunities, led by Donn Marrin, San Diego State University Workshop 3. Innovative Technologies: Challenges and Opportunities, led by Bill Cox, Regenesis and Jim Landmeyer, USGS 12:30 p.m. Lunch 1:00 p.m. Keynote Address - James Rocco - The future of Corrective Action: Challenges and Opportunities. Mr. Rocco will reflect on 25 years experience in the environmental industry working for a major petroleum company and his work in helping to shape the future of corrective action. According to Mr. Rocco, the future of corrective action holds significant promises for all parties. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mini Course 1 Hydrogen Sampling 3:00-5:00 Patrick McLoughlin, Ph.D. Course Leader This course will provide the practitioner with the theory and practice of biogenic gas sampling. Utilizing the slow-purge method in conjunction with the Microseeps Bubble Strip Sampler, participants will learn the technique of bubble strip sampling and see samples analyzed. Sampling for Hydrogen and other biogenic gases is a new means delineating redox zones in contaminated aquifers and is particularly useful for characterizing aquifer systems containing chlorinated solvents, pesticides, and MTBE. $50 Fee to Attend ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mini Course 2 Spatial Risk Assessment 3:00-5:00 James Rocco, Sage Risk Solutions LLC Lesley Hay Wilson, P.E., Sage Risk Solutions LLC This session will provide an introduction to the role of GIS and environmental information systems in corrective action. The discussion will include a presentation on GIS fundamentals, developing digital facility descriptions and site conceptual models and integrating the information systems into the overall risk assessment calculation process. The tools and methods to be discussed are designed to support risk based decision making at large complex sites. $50 Fee to Attend ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For More Information Please Contact Microseeps, Inc.
