Invitation
Communities Surrounding Federal Facilities Who Have had Interactions
with the
Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)

The Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC) is composed of nationally
recognized
scientists who provide advice to (ATSDR) . Two year ago the BSC formed
the
Communities/Tribal Subcommittee(C/TS) to provide information on the
perspective of communities and tribes with the aim to improve the
Agency's
(POLICIES AND PRACTICES ). The C/TS is composed of three member of the
BCS
who work closely with 9 Special Consultants from communities tribes
across
the country.

To further the aim of the subcommittee we are planning a meeting in San
Francisco on Aug. 30 and 31 on Health Assessment and Federal Facilities
on
Sept.1and 2, 1999. The focus of the meeting will be to obtain the
community
perspective regarding ATSDR policies and practices at Federal facilites.
The
objective is to obtain input to bring back to the BSC to provide advice
to
ATSDR.

We would appreciate you sharing experience, both positive and
negaitive,with
the CTS. We are interested in your ability to access, communicate with,
and
obtain feedback from the Agency. We are particularly interested in
aspects of
ATSDR activities which may be confusing or seem cumbersome as well as
those
that worked well. We would like your suggestions for improvement and
help in
identifying and prioritizing areas for improvement. We hope to keep a
positive tone to the meeting while identifying critical issues to make
constructive suggestions to recommend to the BSC.

We would appreciate it if you could respattatchedond back to us by
August 13,
1999. You can send your respond to anyone on the list.We will compile
the
responses to develop the final agenda for the meeting and attach the
responses to the minuets of the meeting. The meeting will be open for
all who
wish to attend and there will be time for community members to speak. In
an
effort to better coordinate, if you wish to speak at the meeting either
in
person for the people ha live in California or by phone (during the
public
comment period), please let us know. A toll-freenumber for the public
comment
period and the agenda will be provided in advance of the meeting.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.
