Kansas says Sunflower cleanup will be costly

State says Sunflower cleanup will cost much more than what Oz estimates

Kansas officials estimate the cost of cleaning up environmental hazards
at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant is two to three times what Oz
Entertainment Co. had planned to spend, according to documents obtained
Thursday by The Kansas City Star. 

The Oz company is negotiating to buy the dormant munitions plant near De
Soto in exchange for cleaning it up. The company plans to spend $32
million to $40 million on the cleanup, according to an Oz feasibility
study. The
study said the company would spend an additional $8.8 million to buy
insurance to guarantee the cleanup. 

But the Kansas Department of Health and Environment estimates the cost
of the cleanup, known as remediation, at $91 million to $130 million.
