In a response to a request by Susan Gawarecki, a question was asked about insitu oxidation methods. Bioventing was mentioned as an example of this process. Bioventing is a technique used for the vadose zone and is probably not applicable to DNAPL-type chemicals and situations. At the Waterloo course, three techniques were discussed: hydrogen peroxide; potassium permanganate and enhanced biodegradation. Most of the research at Waterloo is related to the last two technologies. Both of these techniques attack the DNAPL directly. While these technologies are not instant removed all of the DNAPL solutions, they appear to be quite effective as they completely destroy the DNAPL chemicals. As with any potential treatment of a DNAPL source, the source needs to be isolated from the aquifer.
