Subject: | Sub-Committee Hearings on Vieques to Begin |
The Senate Armed Services Sub-Committe on Readiness and Management Support is scheduled to hold hearings Wednesday, September 22, 1999 on the issue of the Navy in Vieques, Puerto Rico. The hearing will be held at 10 AM in Russell Building #222. The military maintains that live training on Vieques is vital to their critical mission. After the death of a local civilian base employee due to ordnance missing it's target by over 1 mile, President Clinton appointed a special commission to evaluate the need for Vieques as a training range. The commission will come back with a recommendation for the President. It is anticipated that the recommendation will go to the President any time now. With the scheduling of this hearing it looks as though Congress will be taking a closer look at this issue as well.
