Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Washington Post calls for reversal of 8149 |
Today, November 16, 1999, the Washington Post called Section 8149 of the Defense Appropriations Bill "terrible policy." The editorial went on to say that military installations are a major contributor to the nations' largest polluter, the federal government. "They ought not be exempt; nor should the lelgislative branch seek to make itself the arbiter of a system of selective law enforcement." The Post criticized the Persident's call for DOD to seek prompt authorization from Congress for payment of fines saying, "That's not good enough." The article goes on to say that efforts are underway in both the House and Senate to add a reverse-rider to another budget bill that would effectively rescind the 8149 language. Apparently some congressional members are seeking compromise language that would rescind the language only in part. To that the Post responds, "That's not good enough, either. In other contexts, this Congress prides itself on being tough with regard to law enforcement. Why only some laws, and not these. They can fix this if they will--and they should."
