PLEASE DIRECT ALL RESPONSES TO <griswold@gissrv.haskell.edu>. ********************************************** 2000 HAZARDOUS WASTE RESEARCH CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOPS The 15th annual Conference on Hazardous Waste Research will be held in Denver, Colorado, May 23-25, 2000. The theme of the conference is "Environmental Challenges and Solutions to Resource Development, Production, and Use." This year's conference will focus on contaminant measurement, remediation and containment, and multi-stakeholder problem-solving methods. Significant portions of the program are devoted to bioremediation, phytoremediation, analytical methods, and both passive and active remediation technologies. The program also contains sessions and workshops on reducing impacts of minerals and petroleum resource development, and on disclosing environmental conditions in property transactions. PHYTOREMEDIATION WORKSHOP OFFERED AS PART OF HSRC CONFERENCE *Phytoremediation: The State of the Science and Practice* is one of four workshops offered at the 2000 Hazardous Waste Research Conference in Denver. Phytoremediation involves the use of plants to clean up or reduce the effects of a variety of contaminants in the environment. The goal of the 8-hour workshop is to give regulators, contractors, site owners/managers, and citizens an understanding of current capabilities and limitations of phytoremediation in several common applications. A pre-conference workshop titled "Technology Transfer for the Domestic Petroleum Industry" will be held at the Holiday Inn Denver Southeast on Monday, May 22, 8:30 - 4:30. The workshop will present cost-effective remediation and problem-solving techniques for use by state regulators to help independent oil and gas producers in the field. A post-conference workshop titled "Disclosure and Environmental Decision Making in Property Transactions" will be offered following the conference on Thursday, May 25, 12:00 noon - 4:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Denver Southeast. Methods on how real estate appraisers and brokers can recognize and disclose potential environmental concerns at residential properties, and how informed consumers, lenders ubsiness and government can reach acceptable transaction agreements will be discussed. An Oil and Gas Well Cleanup Site Field Trip will be conducted following the conference from 12:15 - 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 25.
