The toxicity of "depleted" uranium (DU) is complicated and the subject
of debate. For example, While the alpha emissions generated by solid DU
don't penetrate most objects, if the DU is oxidized or otherwise
converted into small particulates, those particulates may be inhaled and
do pose a radioactive risk within the lungs.
