The toxicity of "depleted" uranium (DU) is complicated and the subject of debate. For example, While the alpha emissions generated by solid DU don't penetrate most objects, if the DU is oxidized or otherwise converted into small particulates, those particulates may be inhaled and do pose a radioactive risk within the lungs.
