Ironically, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's reluctance to address fully the environmental threat of buried uranium weapons on Vieques gives residents there an additional reason to demand an end to Navy firing exercised. If explosive shells or bombs - or even "dummy" weapons - contact the uranium weapons, they could cause oxidation and the spread of uranium particle. The Commission says it would order full cleanup only if the President orders the Navy to stop training there. If that's the federal government's approach to range management, then the Viequenses have yet another reason to oppose the Navy presence.
