Please Post: STUDY OF CAMP EDWARDS, ON CAPE COD CONCLUSIVELY SHOWS THAT ARTILLERY TRAINING CONTAMINATES SOIL AND GROUNDWATER. The following appeared in today's ( 7 June) Cape Cod Times. By KEVIN DENNEHY STAFF WRITER As more results emerge from soil and water testing at Camp Edwards, it turns out that federal environmental officials and the military might not be that far apart on one conclusion: High-fire training was a likely factor in years of base pollution. National Guard officials now agree that high-explosive training, not just improper disposal of munitions, might have played a part in Upper Cape groundwater contamination, something long asserted by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Preliminary data taken from monitoring wells near known targets on the "impact" area show high levels of Royal Dutch Explosive, or RDX, in the soil, and in the groundwater where the particles would have likely migrated. Of 21 wells installed in early March, 14 have shown high levels of the explosive material, said Lt. Col. Joseph Knott, the MMR project officer with the National Guard Bureau. A team of Army scientists is scheduled to visit the base next month to confirm the data. Joel Feigenbaum ph: (508) 833-0144 24 Pond View Drive E.
