The small cluster of protesters yelled, waved fists and cheered. ''We stopped them,'' one of their leaders shouted over a loudspeaker from the top of a small building on the prow of a slope overlooking the Kuni range. Below, racing toward the four distant targets with their huge black bull's-eyes, the tiny figures of half a dozen protesters were visible, one of them carrying a huge white flag. A second A-10 dove low, then also pulled up as guards pursued these protesters, who had managed to slip through a barbed-wire fence and crawl unseen through fields of corn to reach the edge of the range. ''Demolish the target,'' the protesters outside the fence cheered in the face of lines of several hundred helmeted policemen, carrying shields and truncheons, blocking their way onto the range.
