Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Patriot Practice |
This little article appeared in the Albuquerque Journal, Wed. July 26, 2000 under Around New Mexico, Staff and Wire Reports "New Patriot Target Practice a Success A new version of the Patriot anti-missile destroyed a cruise missile drone in flight on Saturday, the Army announced. It's the first time the Patriot Advanced Capability-3, or PAC-3, has been used against an 'air-breathing' target such as a cruise missile or jet airplane. The Patriot so far has been successful in three attempts to shoot down ballistic missiles, such as the Russian Scud, that fly into space before falling back to Earth. Cruise missiles fly close to the Earth's surface. The short-range Patriot is planned to be a part of a larger system of battlefield missile defenses. Each missile costs $3.1 million; the PAC-3 program is expected to cost $4.5 billion."
