The full story is at http://www.sjmercury.com/front/docs1/032326.htm Depot's open-air munitions-disposal site is catching flak Ordnance explosions trigger anger and lawsuit BY BRANDON BAILEY Mercury News HERLONG -- The bombs usually go off around 3:30 p.m. With a thunderous CRAA-ACK, the first shock wave sets dishes rattling in houses on the far side of Honey Lake. From their front porch 12 miles away, Kim Ramos and Larry Beach can watch the fireballs rising from the side of Skedaddle Ridge, as dirty brown mushroom clouds drift across an otherwise blue sky. It's an almost-daily occurrence in the high desert of Lassen County. The U.S. military burns and explodes thousands of tons of surplus rockets and bombs every year here at the Sierra Army Depot, the nation's largest site for open-air disposal of live munitions. The Army says it's necessary, but some rural residents are angry about the noise and vibrations --and fearful that the smoke and fumes are endangering their health.
