Staff Writer Brian Hiatt reports: The original Woodstock, held in the bucolic setting of an upstate New York farm, promised a return to nature - a pathway back to an Eden unpolluted by the modern world. Thirty years later, Woodstock '99 was held at a toxic waste site. The former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, N.Y., where the three-day festival was held, has been designated since 1987 as one of the worst hazardous waste sites in the country by the Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund program, which works to clean up such sites.
