Shipyard Fire Poses No Risk, Officials Say But neighbors notice
multicolored fumes

San Francisco -- The smoke from a slow-burning toxic landfill at the
Hunters Point Naval Shipyard probably poses no health threat to nearby
residents, federal environmental officials said yesterday. 

Air samples taken Sept. 1 from near the smoldering dump show only an
overabundance of benzine, a gas created by car exhaust. Environmental
officials speculate the benzine may be blowing over from nearby Highway 101. 

``The initial read is a good one, fortunately,'' said Leo Kay, spokesman
for the Environmental Protection Agency. ``This fire will be anticlimactic,
I think.'' 

But some angry residents in the nearby Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood
pointed out that the air quality samples were taken long after clouds of
multicolored smoke were seen puffing up from the landfill, which has been
aflame since Aug. 16.
