To read the complete article copy and paste the following link to your Browser. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2000/09/12 /MN19938.DTL Navy Feels The Heat Over Fire Alerting of residents delayed three weeks Tom Zoellner, Chronicle Staff Writer Tuesday, September 12, 2000 The Environmental Protection Agency criticized the U.S. Navy yesterday for letting a fire burn at a toxic landfill at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard for more than three weeks before issuing a public alert. ``We're unhappy about the timeliness of the Navy's response,'' said Daniel Meer, chief of the Superfund Division of EPA's Federal Facilities Cleanup Branch in San Francisco. Meer said the Navy needs better emergency plans for the abandoned ship-repair facility 10 miles south of downtown, where a stubborn underground fire has been smoldering since Aug. 18. It started as a grass fire, apparently set off by a homeless man. A federal fire crew thought that they had extinguished the blaze after six hours of dousing it with water, but hot spots continue to erupt in the field. continued...
