September 20, 2000 Cape Cod Times EPA seeks bigger detonation chamber Larger munitions at base need more room to explode By KEVIN DENNEHY STAFF WRITER "CAMP EDWARDS - When the National Guard earlier this summer unveiled a "contained detonation chamber" to detonate bombs and shells, environmentalists, residents and military officials lauded the technology. It was a means to clear the base of decades of leftover munitions in a safe, clean way. There's only one problem. The portable chamber isn't big enough. At the most, the machine can handle two 81mm high-explosive mortar rounds - up to 6.5 pounds of net explosive weight each - at a time. But it can do nothing with the 105 mm and 155 mm munitions. "And they are just all over the place out there," said Todd Borci of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, which is urging a bigger chamber."
