Navy plans to cover landfill,
says fire is out

(09-20) 02:24 EDT SAN FRANCISCO
(AP) -- The Navy said Tuesday that a landfill fire which has smoldered 
at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard for more than a month is believed to be 
out. 

Tom Pinnard, a civilian spokesman for the Navy, says no smoke has been 
seen at the burn site for several days. 

``We're treating it as though it was out,'' Pinnard told the San 
Francisco Examiner. 

Air monitoring data released by the Navy last week showed that the fire 
raised levels of benzene -- a carcinogen commonly emitted by automobile 
exhausts -- in the air but did not generate any other toxic fumes.
