Riley berates Army

Congressman questions military's credibility at capital hearing

WASHINGTON

Alabama 3rd District Congressman Bob Riley Thursday challenged safety
conditions at the chemical weapons incinerator under construction in Anniston.

Riley's challenge came during a Congressional subcommittee hearing called
to investigate the May leak of nerve gas at the chemical weapons
incinerator in Tooele, Utah.

The Army's reply was that it would take an amount of the leaked substance
sufficient to fill a king-size waterbed to be lethal.

Besides Riley, three Calhoun County officials were at the hearing to voice
concerns about the facility under construction at Anniston Army Depot.
Among their concerns were changes in emergency protocol, payment of
environmental impact fees, and the ability of the incinerator to operate
without leaking what it is supposed to destroy.

"My faith in the credibility on the Army is near its breaking point,"Riley
said during the hearings before the House Armed Services Procurement
subcommittee.
