The Military Waste Cleanup (MilWaste) Project works with citizens,
citizen-scientists, regulatory and military officials to help communities
affected by military pollution achieve effective environmental cleanups. It
responds to a Cold War legacy of military environmental contamination,
inadequate mechanisms for public oversight, and unequal funding for
military vs. non-military applications of science and technology. MilWaste

with communities affected by military pollution.

The Project Director/Fellow has principal responsibility for the project.

non-profit organizations, and professors and scientists at community
colleges, colleges and universities that will be the NTEN.
ˇ Supervise the Project's work to review, interpret and evaluate
environmental engineering data from military installations.
ˇ Organize and coordinate public meetings, national-level conferences and
workshops.
ˇ Prepare grant proposals and progress reports, supervise budget records
and the tracking of expenses and income.
ˇ Supervise project staff and interns carrying out project responsibilities
such as:
ˇ Communicating with citizens and technical experts on cleanup and
environmental matters and processing requests for information and
organizing mailings.
ˇ Providing technical support such as newsletter production for citizen
organizations.
ˇ Conducting research on relevant topics.

III. Basic Knowledge:

Requires a Masters degree (Doctorate preferred), preferably in sciences or
social studies of science, with excellent knowledge of chemistry,
environmental science, hydrology, and/or public health. Excellent oral and
written communication skills and computer skills (word processing,
spreadsheets, database management, graphics, web), the ability to
communicate effectively with foundations, the media, citizen organizations,
scholars and students, the ability to work independently, flexibility and
the ability to manage multiple and diverse tasks.

IV. Knowledge/Personal traits:

ˇ Minimum of two (2) years experience working in the environmental field
and/or in nonprofit organizations.
ˇ Familiar with the problems and challenges associated with the environment
and the military.
ˇ Ability to work effectively with citizens' groups and other organizations
working on similar progressive causes.
ˇ Comfortable with networking and interaction with people of diverse
backgrounds.
ˇ Meeting and conference planning experience desirable.
ˇ Academic, professional, or volunteer experience in the philosophy of
science/science studies, military and the environment, public health and
the environment, and similar progressive causes is desirable.
