To read the entire article go to: http://www.adn.com/nation/story/0,2360,205774,00.html U.S. to begin cleanup of Colville River site Work to focus on old Umiat air station By Elizabeth Manning Anchorage Daily News Reporter (Published October 21, 2000) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin a $20 million cleanup this winter at a remote former military site southwest of Prudhoe Bay. But North Slope residents contend that the Corps isn't doing enough to find the source of PCBs and other toxins that have showed up in the nearby Colville River. The old Umiat air station was once a refueling stop for military planes bound for Distant Early Warning sites on the continent's north rim. But it was also an oil exploration site; the U.S. Navy drilled 11 test wells in the area beginning in 1944. Today, Umiat is one of more than 100 contaminated sites left behind by the U.S. military in Alaska and one of the highest cleanup priorities for the Corps. Only a handful of people live there, tending a weather station and providing fuel and lodging.
