Air Force will clean polluted base aquifer

The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Amid suspicions of illnesses, dwindling property values
and a pending lawsuit stemming from a contaminated aquifer running under
Kelly Air Force Base and some 20,000 adjacent homes and businesses, the Air
Force has agreed to clean the underwater source to drinking water standards.

Air Force officials plan to submit a cleanup plan to state regulators
detailing up to five cleanup alternatives and recommending one, said Adam
Antoine, director of environmental programs at Kelly for the Air Force Base
Conversion Agency.

Kelly officials also have scheduled a Nov. 1 meeting to get public comment
on the cleanup options, which include pump-and-treat wells throughout the
contaminated area and monitored natural attenuation. Using natural
attenuation, the Air Force would continue to capture pollutants on base,
but let the polluted groundwater already off base degrade naturally over 30
years.
