Panel gives community a voice on cleanup

The Air Force not only has regulators looking over its shoulder in its
cleanup of Kelly AFB, a panel of community members also has its say about
cleanup technologies, strategies and goals.

The Kelly AFB Restoration Advisory Board, which meets quarterly at a school
near the base, is a 23-member panel created in November 1994 to "review,
discuss and evaluate a wide range of draft and final technical documents,
status reports and proposed and final plans related to the cleanup,"
according to Kelly documents.

Members of the RAB, as it's known, don't have the power, as federal and
state regulators do, to stop a cleanup plan proposed by the Air Force. Its
members simply can comment, advise and make the views of
the community known to the decision-makers.
