Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Stakeholder Workshop on Long-Term Stewardship |
I am writing to invite you to a Stakeholder Workshop to discuss the Draft Long-Term Stewardship Study, recently released by the Department of Energy. The Workshop will take place on: Thursday, December 14, 2000 6:00-8:00 P.M. local time Argent Hotel, 50 Third Street, San Francisco, CA We have scheduled this Stakeholder Workshop to coincide with the December 13-15 Workshop on Land Transfer and Long Term Management of Contaminated Federal Facilities. The purpose of this Stakeholder Workshop is to exchange information and have some constructive discussions between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and interested parties on the Draft Long-Term Stewardship Study. DOE invites the general public, other Federal agencies, Native American Tribes, state and local governments, and all other interested parties to comment on the Draft Study. All comments will be captured and considered, whether they are provided at the Stakeholder Workshop or through other means (see below). The Draft Study has been prepared in accordance with the terms of a 1998 Settlement Agreement that resolved a lawsuit brought against DOE by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and 38 other plaintiffs. It incorporates input received during a public scoping process. The goal of the Draft Study is to inform decision-makers and the public about the long-term stewardship issues and challenges facing DOE and potential options for addressing such issues. The Draft Study primarily addresses institutional and programmatic issues, not site-specific long-term stewardship requirements, which are the subject of a separate Report to Congress now being prepared. Copies of the Draft Study can be requested by telephone at 1-800-736-3282. The Draft Study and its supporting technical documents also are available for review at www.em.doe.gov/lts. Comments can also be submitted during the public comment period (which extends through December 15, 2000) to Steven Livingstone, Project Manager, Office of Long Term Stewardship, (EM-51), Office of Environmental Management, U.S. Department of Energy, P.O. Box 45079, Washington, D.C. 20026-5079, phone: 202-586-9280. Comments may also be submitted electronically to Steven.Livingstone@em.doe.gov or by fax to 202-863-7036. In addition, the Department will conduct a formal public hearing on the Draft Study. This hearing will take place Thursday, November 30, 2000, from 9:00AM - 1:00PM at the U.S. Department of Energy, Forrestal Building, Room 1E245, 1000 Independence Avenue, Washington, DC. If you desire further information, please feel free to contact me at 202-586-9280 or Steven Livingstone at 202-586-9874. I look forward to a productive workshop. Sincerely, James D.
