Buried military rocket takes off Thursday, 14 December 2000 11:14 (ET) BARTOW, Fla., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Polk County, Fla., sheriff's deputies Thursday searched a small airport for additional buried World War II rockets like the one that roared to life Wednesday, flew more than 100 feet into a fence and started a grass fire. No one was hurt. Investigators said they believe the 2.25-inch practice rocket was ignited by another fire -- a controlled burn intended to clear brush at the site for a new Sheriff's Department hangar at Bartow Municipal Airport. Deputies nearby heard an explosion and the sound of something flying through the air and when they investigated found the rocket. "At that point, we were not sure what the device was or what it was made of or what it might contain as far as explosives," said Michal Shanley, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
